Today, does not exist. We set sail yesterday. Meantime, I have a dental appointment tomorrow at 2pm, and an ENT appointment at 3:20. Oh joy, where is thy sting? Also, I finally saw the second half of the House sixth-season opener, and I don't think this is too much of a spoiler when I say that while the West Wing season four finale/fifth season opener was more of a let-down between fantastic buildup to disappointingly-flat, that's not saying very much. I mean there was angst and trembling blue eyes and so forth, but other than that, really. It was awful. Current Mood: cranky

February 22nd, 200908:08 pm: Redemption: originality...
I'm sitting in the "It's not SF but I like it", thinking about the past panel (the last one I moderated) on originality - why are there no more original TV series/movies? And, sadly, we concluded: it's not just the accountants, it's because to a certain extent no one wants all original, all the time: we all want to just veg out in front of something we expect: and this fits surprisingly well into the discussion of what we like when we're not watching SF/F. Which is: West Wing, House, Due South, The Professionals, M*A*S*H, Spooks, Northern Exposure - genre shows with a big overlap between their fans and SF/F fans. Time Team, Ajay points out. Mythbusters, Victorian Farm... (I also said: Have I Got News For You, As Time Goes By, and the novels of Jane Austen.) Current Mood: tired

August 4th, 200409:10 am: Things that have gone wrong already this week
1. My laptop charger is bust. 2. We lost humiliatingly at the Sala quiz (29 points: we only got 5 out of 5 in the Literature category, and the team that marked our questions mistakenly marked us wrong in the Dickens question that we got right) 3. I failed to successfully tape West Wing last night - my VCR got me 60 minutes of blue screen. First time I've used the timer. I don't watch enough TV. 4. My period started. (Okay, that's not "gone wrong", but as I always get cramps the first day, it's bloody annoying, all right?) 5. I got soaked last night walking home, I think I'm starting a cold (which isn't surprising, since brandnewgun has been in the office all week spreading her germs generously around), and it's still raining this morning. ...and it's only Wednesday. On the other hand, I played with Scarlett, the brandnewgun household kitten, last night, and she is utterly adorable and does the most fantastic kitty leaps. Tell me stuff to cheer me up. April 1st, 200312:50 pm: West Wing
I'm about to go out and kill some innocent vegetable for food, but I checked on the spoilers-avoidable West Wing website and discovered that I had only missed two episodes in real terms ("War Crimes" and "Gone Quiet") because I'd seen up to and including "On the Day Before" thanks to brandnewgun before her VCR stopped working. I'm still furious, but I no longer want to slay TV executives who think people who don't follow sports don't matter. Because basically, providing you're not a vegetable, I'm a nice person. Okay, this may not reassure any TV executives who are having this read to them. Remember, I am not a vegetarian because I love animals. I am a vegetarian because I hate plants. [A.
