02:55 pm: Weird things I have never thought would be true
1. Mulder/Scully still works for me better than Mulder/Krycek. (Not better than Mulder/Skinner, are you mad?)
2. I like listening to music.
3. I have long hair. I mean, it's long enough to catch together in the back as a ponytail. Not a very long ponytail. Still.
4. I sometimes drink black coffee.
5. [info]jekesta has corrupted me. I want to read A-Team slashfic. Only I don't want any one pairing, I want teamfic. They don't actually all have to have sex with each other, at least not all at once, but I want fanfic in which they do silly missions and such and no one actually gets shot, just like usual, but with Hannibal giving comforting handjobs to BA and calling him "sergeant" and BA going down on Murdock when Murdock is freaking out, and Face going down on everyone at the slightest indication that they're interested. And none of them ever actually talk about it, though sometimes Face wants to, but BA just glowers and Hannibal slaps in him on the shoulder and tells him not to worry and Murdock goes off on long rambling discursive comments about how people think of themselves and he's always wanted to have a puppy. Or, you know, anything like that. But definitely no pairings. And I can't see them having an orgy. I suppose I could see them like I see SG1, a team who have exogamous relationships but who are closer to each other than anyone outside the team, but I think that's too sane and normal and well-organised for the A-Team.

08:52 am: 80sficapalooza - Star Wars: "Winning without words"
Well, this is pretty much all [info]dragovianknight's fault. Really it is. Having proposed eight or nine prompts for 80s fandoms, I really had to claim something - but it had to be something for the beginning of the month because I'm going to be fiendishly busy by the end of it. ...and also, I'm not writing MacGyver fanfic for anyone who can't spell MacGyver. So that left me with just one possible prompt, and... er, yes.

I'll post it on my journal once it's no longer the 3rd of May. (Mine is the first story up for the day...)

10:19 pm: OMGWTF???
TelevisionWithoutPity is down?

But this is an emergency! I have just seen "Control" and "Mob Rules" and I want to read the episode re-cap!

Hm. Perhaps I should do nothing: the site is back up )

PS TelevisionWithoutPity hates me. The site is up: the House page is down. I got to read the first page of the recap of "Control", and then it decided to take it away from me. Without even the decency to offer me a month off clinic duty first. *sulks*

10:27 am: Slash means...
Reading a post on [info]green_amber's journal, I routinely got faintly irritated at her incorrect use of the word "slash" to mean "any story with a sexual/romantic relationship". With Constance, she's been using the word incorrectly for years, and by now I think she just does it to irritate me because she knows the correct meaning, but I'm interested in how my friends-list perceive the word.

11:51 pm: The Day After Tomorrow
...was, on one level, merely your classic bad-science disaster movie with inane plot. And there is truth to this description (see The Day After Tomorrow in 15 minutes).

but, spoilerific spoiler spoiler spoiler... )

08:42 am: 20th Anniversary
Twenty years ago - on a cold and miserable day sometime in late October or early November - I arrived home from school to find an envelope waiting for me, with a fanzine inside. (I could tell by the heft and weight.) I stood there over the envelope, in my heavy winter coat with the hood that tied close over my head with a knot that had got wet and was a struggle to undo, breathless with anticipation. I had discovered fandom that year, 1983, and was not unaccustomed to coming home to find envelopes with exciting fanzines and newsletters inside. But this was advertised as a fanzine with "same-sex stories", age statement required. Well, I already knew how to handle that: write to the editor saying "I state that I am over 18". It wasn't exactly a lie, I told my conscience: I certainly was stating that I was over 18. That I was 16 was, well, beside the point. (In any case, as I realised later, editors want an age statement, true or not, to save themselves from potential prosecution by angry parents. My parents had never tried to stop me from reading anything, however "unsuitable" they deemed it. They might have felt differently had they seen the Gayle Feyrer cover illustrations for The Prize, but as far as I know, they never have.)

I kept telling myself, while focussing very hard on the damned knot (it was hot inside the house and I wanted to get my coat off before I sat down and started reading) that Blake's 7 fandom, so far, was full of women, and that these "same-sex stories" would undoubtedly be mostly about women, not men. But even then, as a very newly-out lesbian (hadn't told anyone that I didn't already know to be lesbian) I knew that what I wanted to read about was Avon and Vila.

Finally, my 16-year-old self got the knot undone. I can't remember what I did with my coat. (My adult self tells me I hung it up. More realistically, I suspect I simply dropped it on the floor. I may have picked it up later. I certainly hope so.) I sat down, opened up the envelope, pulled out the fanzine, and discovered with an instant shock of recognition, happiness, joy, and, yes, sheer sexual arousal that this was a zine full of stories about Avon and Vila. I was hooked. I took zine and self upstairs to my room and didn't come down again until I was yelled for to come and have tea. Towards the end of the zine, I even found out that my feelings had a name: this was a slash zine. I was a slash fan.

And have been, now, for twenty years.
