08:59 pm: The dragon-cave's back!
Apparently the owner is celebrating his graduation from high school with a road trip. It's deeply peculiar that he is, on paper at least, a remarkable wealthy entrepreneur, all done with pixel-dragons and clicks... but because he lives in the US, he's not old enough to buy himself a drink.

(In the UK, between 16 and 18, it is legal to have a drink of wine or cider or beer with your meal, providing someone over 18 buys it for you: and you can buy and eat as many liqueur chocolates as you like, until you throw up. Also, the police are not obligated to report a teenager picked up drunk and incompetent to their parents, though I imagine most police forces find subtle methods of doing so. "Hello, sir and ma'am: here is your offspring. Can't say what they may or may not have been doing, but we think you may need to advise them about hangover remedies." Clearly we do things better here.)

Anyway, as a result of the crash, the pink dragon I thought was dead has a new lease of life:

Steg Trandafir!

08:39 am: Quotes meme and dragons
The quotes meme was gacked from [info]telesilla and [info]lexin.

Go to http://quotationspage.com/random.php3 and browse the random quotes until you find five that you think reflect who you are or what you believe. (Because I can browse that kind of site forever, I decided I had to pick one from each page. Mostly the quotes are from Dead White Guys, but there are exceptions!

"I have been through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened." - Mark Twain (1835-1910)

"The important thing is this: to be able at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we could become." Charles Du Bos (1882-1939)

"Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple." - Dr. Seuss (1904-1991)

"It's the same each time with progress. First they ignore you, then they say you're mad, then dangerous, then there's a pause and then you can't find anyone who disagrees with you." - Tony Benn (1925- )

"People have a hard time letting go of their suffering. Out of a fear of the unknown, they prefer suffering that is familiar." - Thich Nhat Hanh (1926- )

"Even the great get greater by doing more of it." Colleen Wainwright, communitcatrix, 04-10-2006

Okay, let me see if I steal and breed 3 pink dragon eggs, can I get at least one of them to grow to adulthood?

09:22 pm: Dragons and Saturdays
Wow, sunrise dragons are pretty: Adopt one today! Named him Mistfall Sunrise: you get sci-fi lit-points if you know why.

Watching Superman Returns is weird. I didn't go see it in the cinema. It's odd how Christopher Reeve took over that role.

06:13 pm: In which I sulk about dragons
Sky M'Cloud became an adult after 12 clicks (and 1513 views / 252 unique views). Rose Knight Riveter became an adult after 14 clicks (and 1612 views / 266 unique views). Very Rattlefin became an adult after 12 clicks (and 1592 views / 242 unique views).

Then two of my hatchlings died after growing wings: 13 clicks/15 clicks: 242/243 unique views: 1592/1760 total views). So when Twinight Doubleheader had had 19 clicks, 254 unique views, and 1679 total views, I thought: better freeze this cute little two-headed dragonlet Adopt one today! and have an example I can keep, than have a tombstone which will shortly disappear.

But I'm annoyed! *she whines* I want the dragon game to play faaaaiiiir.

09:13 am: By the way, the other pink dragon is a boy.
Dragon Cave seem to have slightly gone over to the idea that pink can be a boy's colour, because now I have a boy pink dragon. (All my other pink and purple dragons are female.)

This is Rosie Riveter and her son by Sir Nacht Maturin, Rose Knight Riveter:

The sexism of this is dealt with in [info]elke_tanzer's journal: I had a longer reaction to post about this at some point. (Elke has disabled comments at IJ, though.)

11:46 pm: It's been a funny kind of day
DEAD: Adopt one today!

NEARLY DEAD: Adopt one today!

NOT QUITE DEAD: Adopt one today!

EGGZ: Adopt one today! Adopt one today!

It is not even the most weird part of today that I saw a tree growing in Glasgow that had a penis and a vagina. (That was in GOMA, at SH[OUT]. There was also a Mapplethorpe photo or two of the kind they don't let children under 12 in to see. One of them was very beautiful: a b/w photo of a man standing in shadow pissing into the mouth of a kneeling man in light. Perfectly balanced forms of light and shadow. Obviously this is the kind of thing you cannot allow children under 12 to see and discuss with their peers, parents, or teachers, though it would be perfectly proper for a child under 12 to see topless models on page 3 of the Sun.)

11:58 pm: I'm being followed by a cottage!
(On Twitter. The owner of the Lochan Mor Lodge in Aviemore is now following me, thanks I think to a reference I made to Mercedes the polar bear moving this autumn.)

I looked up the lodge online and discovered it is a really rather spiffy self-catering place: anyone fancy going there for a winter break next January, over my birthday?

Didn't leave the house today. Still tired.

Baked some pretty splendid rice bread, and finished off the dough by kneading in the last of the Arran canembert I got for half price three weeks ago. Yum.

10:39 am: I have found out what I can do with my birthday cupcakes....
They are going to a trans poetry/prose performance tonight, as the free entertainment, since the place where the event is happening doesn't have a cafe-bar at present. So, joy. (There are 24+ wee cakelets, chocolate with Guinness, banana-walnut, more chocolate-with-Guiness with a crumb topping, some rather precious almond with rosewater, and a very few of the gluten-free spice cakes with peanut butter.)

I hope they have a good time and embrace their destiny fully as cake.

Next major baking session, Redemption. Actually, I need to make another trial batch of gluten-free before then, as I have a notion for a different recipe that involves ground almonds... and so far, no one's poked their head up on the Redemption mailing list to say "I'm coeliac and vegan AND ALLERGIC TO NUTS" even though I specially asked.

Oh, I got a warning e-mail from someone suggesting I not produce a t-shirt that says "This is not a t-shirt. Anyone who insists that it is, is just putting on airs to be interesting" as it would just stir up trouble. Hm. The worst of it is, while I still think it would be very funny, he may well be right. What do you think?

10:03 pm: Reading about someone reading the Lymond Chronicles
I managed to read the first four volumes of the Lymond Chronicles, one by one, though I did get two-thirds of the way through Pawn in Frankincense at one point, ran out of time, returned it to the library, and did not read the last third until well over a year later. cut for inconsiderable spoilers )

I can't be the only one to find him irritating at best, detestable at worst, can I? I'm sure I'm not the only one to hate Spike, nor to find emo Doctor Ten just annoying?

10:58 pm: Yesterday, and today
I get depressed, over nothing very important, and it becomes difficult to write about stuff.

It was my dad's 82nd birthday yesterday. I gave him cake, and a jar of "pumpkin marmalade", which is quite tasty, and a book; Jane Austen's England, which I knew he would like, and he did.

Also, I heard the spectacularly good news that his book is to be published: the magnum opus he spent 10 years writing and then discovered no publishing house wanted to do a book by an unknown writer (unknown except to academic fans of Robert Southey) about an unknown hero (unknown except to Quakers who recall pre-WWII). But, my dad's wealthiest former PhD student had one of her books made into a movie, and - clearly being a person of taste, discerment, and good judgement - is offering the university press a private subvention to produce the book. So, yay.

My brother rang to wish him a happy birthday and to tell us he was having his wisdom teeth out tomorrow.

I left just before 10pm and just missed the 11 bus, so walked downhill for 40 minutes and caught the next 11 bus on Princes Street. My ankle hurt. I probably overdid it.

Today I slept in. And it snowed. I have awesome amounts of cake leftover from Saturday night, but I shall consider it a trial run for cake-making for Redemption.

It didn't snow much where I live or where I work (I got caught in a couple of flurries, but it never lay down on the pavement and looked pretty). And according to Weather Pixie, right now it's 3 degrees above freezing and raining lightly. I took some cake to work: I think my favourite is the banana-walnut cakes.

My mum gave me a tray for 12 mini-muffins (even smaller than most fairy cakes) and a big six-muffin tray. Also a muffin recipe book.
