Charles Du Bos (1882-1939) "Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple." - Dr. Seuss (1904-1991) "It's the same each time with progress. First they ignore you, then they say you're mad, then dangerous, then there's a pause and then you can't find anyone who disagrees with you." - Tony Benn (1925- ) "People have a hard time letting go of their suffering. Out of a fear of the unknown, they prefer suffering that is familiar." - Thich Nhat Hanh (1926- ) "Even the great get greater by doing more of it." Colleen Wainwright, communitcatrix, 04-10-2006 --- Okay, let me see if I steal and breed 3 pink dragon eggs, can I get at least one of them to grow to adulthood? ![]() ![]() --- PS I can't find my hairbrush! Send good vibes for finding it... (hey, it worked with my camera) Current Mood: June 29th, 2009: Dopey little dragons I just hatched a sunrise dragon: so now I want a sunset dragon: ![]() My first summer egg!: ![]() Hoping to hatch these in order to freeze them as just-winged fledglings: ![]() Still wanting another stone dragon so I can breed geode dragons: And I want another pink dragon so I can breed more pink dragons, because they're cute: ![]() Current Mood: June 3rd, 2009: OMG. This is almost too horrible to contemplate. I found my half-litre flask. (Of course, I found it after I bought a replacement.) Unfortunately, I now have in my possession a half-litre metal flask which had soup in it and which has been left, closed, on the floor of the meeting-room (it fell behind a chair: no one noticed) for well over a month. What should I do? ( Poll! ) ![]() ![]() Tags: ;l, dragon eggs need clicky, polls, soup May 16th, 2009: Moldova should win. By the way. Or come second. Sheesh, I'm not picky. I stand to win £14 if Moldova wins, and £9 if Moldova comes second. I am in a cafe near work where there's a Eurovision night and free wifi, so what the hell: liveblog Eurovision! With wine. I had for some reason expected this to be a quiet evening, well, quiet as far as Eurovision ever is, but the cafeist is beaming: the room is crowded (I got the last stool), and business is buzzing. ( Eurovision Moskva 2009 ) ![]() Moldova is top in the Trending Topics in Twitter right now. Does this mean anything? Will Twitter tweet Eurovision winner? Mostly it seems to be about their short-skirtedness. According to UK Gay News, now at midnight 17th May in Moscow: "Openly gay Graham Norton, who hosts BBC Television's coverage of Eurovision Song Contest has commented on the arrests of gay activists in Moscow on the live telecast." Huh. I didn't hear him. Good. (This is why I wore my Aberdeen Pride t-shirt: it's the nicest rainbow t-shirt I have.) Update, 22:15 - Andrew Lord Webber is on TV making fish-mouths. I am on my second rather large glass of wine, and wondering if I should have something to eat. Update - 22:43 - Slovakia is voting, 21st country out of 42, and so far, the top three countries are Norway by an enormous margin, Iceland and Turkey fairly neck and neck. Moldova is last with 11 points. (Spain was last with none, but got 12 pity points from someone.) Update - 22:55 - Good grief: Cyprus awarded Greece 12 points. As the woman standing next to me said: Shock of the night. 30 countries voted: top three now Norway, Azerbaijan, and Iceland. Turkey's in 4th place - and Norway just went over 300 points and has officially won. Update - 23:00 - Ireland just voted. It's now just a question of which country will be second - Norway's way ahead. Iceland and Azerbaijan keep changing places: Turkey and the UK are fighting for 4th and 5th. Update - 23:03 - Moldova voted, and gave their 12 points to Romania. Jolly good. (Moldova have a respectable-if-dull 57 points. Bah. My neighbours at the next table drew Norway in the prize draw: cool for them.) Update - 23:07 - Almost at the end of voting. Azerbaijan just voted. And Norway won by something incredible, with Azerbaijan in second place, and Moldova sort of middle with 69 points. I'm glad Andrew Dull Webber didn't win. The Norwegian boy did look awesomely cute. ...and we're done. (The same person who won the prize draw also won the tie-breaker for guessing "Norway" and got a bottle of bubbly. Yay?) Current Mood: May 6th, 2009: I'm being followed by a cottage! (On Twitter. The owner of the Lochan Mor Lodge in Aviemore is now following me, thanks I think to a reference I made to Mercedes the polar bear moving this autumn.) I looked up the lodge online and discovered it is a really rather spiffy self-catering place: anyone fancy going there for a winter break next January, over my birthday? ![]() There's always dragons. Current Mood: May 3rd, 2009: The Interminable Sharing Knife I re-read part 3 of The Sharing Knife - the first time I'd re-read it since I bought it: and concluded all over again that Lois McMaster Bujold has something. Not a particularly original thought, true. But I came to the end of Part 2 of TSK with a not-altogether-happy realisation that Bujold had plans for part 3 - and the last few pages of 3, when it was becoming perfectly obvious that there was going to be a part 4, were kind of the same, intensified. There is no plot. Dag and Spark remain perfectly, perfectly happy. Dag continues to be Lakewalker Superman, acquiring new ground skills every novel. If you haven't read part 3 yet, well, I doubt if this is a spoiler. It's a kind of odyssey through the US after the Fall of the Cities, where everyone is white and everyone is heterosexual and most people live contented, bucolic lives, unless they get taken by malices or bandits. (Is Bujold ever going to explain the extraordinary whiteness of everyone in her world? Granted a totally post-racial America, where no one cares what colour your skin is, I would then assume there would still be a substantial variation... but there isn't.) It's sort of like pre-contact Barrayar without the class system. It wouldn't be anything too unusual in most fantasy writers, but coming from Bujold, who we're aware can be far more complex and subtle, this sunny, all-white, all-het fantasy does seem... weird. And yet; I still want to read part 4. That's what I mean when I say: she has something. In other news, I got two more rare eggs today, so now I have cloud egg, sun egg, and floating-on-air egg, besides the two I bred. Give my eggs clicky! Help my baby dragons grow! ![]() Tags: books are what i read, dragon eggs need clicky : My hatchling is going to die soon. It's kind of sad in an online way. ![]() I got to the gym this morning and was unpacking when I realised I had forgotten my swimsuit, so I did not do "gym and swim": I only did gym. I also forgot my hairbrush, which was slightly ghastly and made me think all over again that I want a haircut like I used to have where brushes were things you really didn't need. There are tiny little green sprouts growing in the interstices of my lawn. I contemplated cutting it. It's quite windy. Mostly I just want to lie out on it in the sun, but it's just windy enough not to be really comfortable doing that. Bob is asleep on the windowsill. She looks quite impossibly comfortable, even though she really doesn't fit it. Current Mood: April 18th, 2009: Shipwar in the Iliad! Support me on this one: the canon pairing is Achilles / Paris, right? ![]() Current Mood: April 7th, 2009: work I have cause to celebrate. I can't tell you exactly why. Later. I have cause to be angry. I can't tell you exactly why. Later. And I have more than cause to be really bloody furious, but I'm almost too tired and too bored with the cause of that, so. Maybe later. Sometimes I just take refuge in dragons. ![]() Current Mood: April 6th, 2009: WTF? On 6th April 2005, I posted a poll. On livejournal. And it's live. On insanejournal. How bizarre is that? ![]() Current Mood: : I hate chess. ![]() ![]() I... think I may have driven my co-worker away with Blazing Saddles. (I am now watching Double Jeopardy.) We did get an hour or so's report work done, and I fed him mushroom kasha, when he would otherwise have fallen into a coma with cheap pizza. I have a long vent to vent about work, but better not just now. Current Mood: April 4th, 2009: If you are reading this... I love you. (Also: woo woo! (Very nearly exactly 28 days after my last one... maybe my cycle is lengthening out.) Current Mood: March 10th, 2009: ILSLISTC! This is the first time I have EVER got this Myers-Brigg result... The analysis indicates that the author of yonmei.insanejournal.com is of the type: ESFP - The Performers: The entertaining and friendly type. They are especially attuned to pleasure and beauty and like to fill their surroundings with soft fabrics, bright colors and sweet smells. They live in the present moment and don´t like to plan ahead - they are always in risk of exhausting themselves.*giggles happily* ![]() Current Mood: March 3rd, 2009: On the grand scale of Things Which Worry Me, this is very, very small. But: ![]() ...is anyone else finding that their clicks are just not registering on the dragoncave site? And, if this is so, who does one contact to inquire what's wrong? Current Mood: February 26th, 2009: Coffee, cats, and dragons When I looked at the clock this morning, I thought it was 8:30, and in a fogged kind of way, knew I had to get washed get dressed put Bob into carry cage get to vets for 9am. Then when I was up, dressed, and ready to go, apart from not having had coffee, I saw that it was 6 minutes to 8am.... I was out by a good hour. So I brewed coffee, and gave Bob her steroid pill - and let both her and Wolf out, since Bob will certainly want to come back soon. I need to leave the house in ten minutes, and I already hear her mrwaring outside the door. *goes to door and lets Bob in* Bob is looking pretty good, after a couple of weeks on steroids. Of course she can't compete in the Olympics any more, but sport isn't everything. Best of all, the pattern of fleabites on her back have dried up and gone away. Will report on her weight, later. ![]() --- Update: 3.4 kilos, as last time. Current Mood: February 25th, 2009: Good morning dragons and coffeeeeeeee.... But her half-sister Cloud Feminist might still make it: ![]() And eggs: ![]() Woke up early and did some work: aim to be in office by 9, so I'm running, I'm running... I also meant to write a to do list for today last night, and didn't. :-( Current Mood: |
