August 8th, 200907:14 am: At the Worldcon: Day Two
There's another fannish couple now staying at Gingerbread Manor (the woman, an early riser like me, expressed surprise at the coincidence, and I pointed out that we both probably used the same search criteria: easy walking distance from the con, good Metro route back, and a very nice place to stay) and so we discussed C. J. Cherryh over breakfast. But I got out of the house before nine, because I had to get to the WSFS Preliminary Business meeting by 9:45 with the 200 copies of the amendment discussed here and here. Which I was - even stopping on the way in Cafe Momus for an espresso. I had never been to a Worldcon business meeting before Friday, and it was more interesting than I expected, though I don't believe I'm likely to go again. Kevin Standlee made a splendid chair, running the meeting with the formality required to get everything done in time but with the fannish leaven of humour. I discovered that Worldcon has a standing committee with the charming name of Nitpicking and Flyspecking. From my particular interests, the process that WSFS is going through to ensure trademark protection for various aspects of Worldcon and the Hugos, were quite interesting in and of themselves. I didn't do a count (and of course there were no diversity forms to fill in), but I believe that the majority of WSFS members who attended the preliminary were male: I think all of us were white: I don't think many were under 30, let alone under 25. There were two interesting and contradictory motions which got treated in interestingly contradictory ways: The first was a couple of boyfans who had proposed a motion to get more boyfans to the Worldcon: promoting the idea that concommittees should go to conventions were young male fans are more likely to hang out and to promote the Worldcon there. (What was said explicitly, in defense of this motion, media fans like myself are not welcome: we do not read books, apparently, and so are not wanted at Worldcons.) The motion was expressed in terms of "let's get more young fans coming to the Worldcon" and there appeared to be general agreement that this would be a Good Thing (providing they are the right kind of young fan, of course - hundreds of media fans would not be welcome....) The second was a motion that concommittees should be required by the constitution to sell memberships at a considerable discount to young fans. This motion got pretty much wiped up and thrown away. The plan would have allowed parents to plan Worldcon attendance with all their children: would have let teenagers go to the Worldcon either with their parents or alone and still get to vote: would have let people between 18 and 25 get what would have amounted to a student discount. The motion would, in other words, have provided the practical means of getting young fans to the Worldcon. It wasn't quite killed; it was amended down to a vague resolution that discounted youth memberships should be recommended to future concommittees, with one man proposing that it would be much simpler if parents were only allowed to stand in queues with their kids and buy the discounted memberships on the door, rather than being able to book well in advance. So, well. I mentioned this last debate to the woman running the Worldcon Volunteers table a bit later on in the day, and she looked at me with a feminist kind of shrug and said " Men," in that way you do. Anyway. I thought I was going to have to run from the WSFS Prelims to my first panel at 12:30, but in fact the resolution you have all been waiting for came up at the very end at 12:05, and... was, by a large majority, killed promptly without debate. That is: the membership present read the resolution, concluded they wanted to hear nothing more whatsoever about it, and voted to "Postpone Indefinitely". I shall (post Worldcon) write up the detailed explanation and defense and post to feministsf, but in the meantime, the business meeting ended at about five past and I went to the greenroom to thank the greenroom manager for bringing me much-needed coffee (I had gone there during recess hoping to get coffee/food when it looked like the meeting would stretch out till 12:30, but the delivery of fresh supplies had not then been made) during the Prelims meeting. February 4th, 200910:03 pm: Reading about someone reading the Lymond Chronicles
I managed to read the first four volumes of the Lymond Chronicles, one by one, though I did get two-thirds of the way through Pawn in Frankincense at one point, ran out of time, returned it to the library, and did not read the last third until well over a year later. ( cut for inconsiderable spoilers )I can't be the only one to find him irritating at best, detestable at worst, can I? I'm sure I'm not the only one to hate Spike, nor to find emo Doctor Ten just annoying? Current Mood: curious

November 1st, 200811:56 pm: Today
I got to watch Doctor Who at Versailles, and write nearly 2000 words (not about Versailles) and see Tom Baker on the extended edition of Have I Got News For You. He is totally cute. Though I did feel for the 36-year-old who had to remind Tom that even though he'd watched Doctor Who back then, he wasn't a boy. Current Mood: sleepy

July 11th, 200810:04 am: NewWho: ( Why it's good that Donna's story ended the way it did )
It's not. Much has changed about the Doctor over the years but much has remained the same. Despite the superficial differences in appearance, at heart, or rather at hearts (the Doctor has two) his character is remarkably consistent.
He is still impulsive, idealistic, ready to risk his life for a worthy cause. He still hates tyranny and oppression and anything that is anti-life. He never gives in and he never gives up, however overwhelming the odds against him.
The Doctor believes in good and fights evil. Though often caught up in violent situations, he is a man of peace. He is never cruel or cowardly.
In fact, to put it simply, the Doctor is a hero. Having the Doctor ( spoiler for NewWho S4 finale ) just give up. For anyone coming here who doesn't usually read my journal, I wrote about this at more length on feministsf the blog. Current Mood: angry

June 24th, 200803:38 pm: Doctor Who meme (gacked from bluerose)
When you see this post, quote from Doctor Who on your LJ."Now drop your weapons or I'll kill him with this deadly jelly baby." (One of my favourite quotes. According to Tom Baker, the original script had the Doctor threatening to kill the Sevateem with a knife: Tom was adamant that there was no way the Doctor would ever do that, and substituted a jelly baby.) There's a line in a later episode, same Doctor: "I never carry weapons. If people see you mean them no harm, they never hurt you. Nine times out of ten..." Most of the other best lines are situational or dialogue. Current Mood: happy

June 14th, 200807:12 pm: Doctor Who and post-bakesale...
I am liveblogging tonight's Doctor Who, for no particular reason. ( Expect Spoilers )The bakesale made £87 + change, and we'll take the remainder (the scones, bread rolls, and a very few cakes) to the Meeting House tomorrow, for post-Meeting Quakers to collect and donate. Update: I wrote a slightly more coherent reaction to episode on feministsf - the blog. Current Mood: happy

May 21st, 200803:25 pm: Class on TV
I am still thinking about a comment alixtii made on her journal. Just out of interest, what's your impression, imaginary Internet people, of the difference between class representation on British TV and American TV? Never mind (for the moment) how you yourself define upper, middle, and working class: what shows currently (or historically) on British TV portrayed which classes, and which ones did you watch? And what is the difference between this and American TV? Current Mood: fannish

June 16th, 200710:30 pm: Tonight's Doctor Who, mostly (episode: Utopia)
Today I was thinking that if it was sunny I would go out. But it was rainy and blowy all day long, so I stayed in, mostly (I did go to the nearest supermarket for washing-up liquid, and it was actually - for a rainy, windy day - a nice day: I was annoyed that my throat was gunged up and I was coughing persistently and could not enjoy it. I went home, and did the washing-up, and mostly then lay on the sofa and watched TV: Cadfael (two of my favourite stories: "A Morbid Taste For Bones" and "The Virgin in the Ice") and later on, the latest episode of Doctor Who and the first episode of the new series, Jekyll. I recommend Jekyll, very much: it's a bloody good twist on the Stevenson story, which I love anyway - and James Nesbitt is really excellent as Doctor Jackman and his counterpart. And I discovered - and leapt up to switch off the TV - that the BBC has taken to doing spoilers at the end of all their series, not just Dr Who. Oh curse and damn them. Why must those of us who do not care for spoilers have to switch off the TV to avoid them and miss all the credits? But the Doctor... ( spoilers, spoilers, everywhere )Tags: doctor who, dr who
