01:38 pm: Water, water, everywhere
I don't know any of my neighbour's phone numbers.

(Why would I? I never phone them!)

According to Scottish Water, who rang me back quite promptly, there are no other reports of outages in my area, suggesting it's a plumbing problem, and they say that the most likely cause of the outage is someone else having plumbing work done and the plumber turning off the wrong water supply from the street.

This sounds appallingly likely, and of course means zero cost to me in fixing it, but I say "appalling" because, well: the only way of finding out is to go ask all my neighbours. And there's no point doing that till post-work time.

...and at that point, there will be no getting a plumber out till tomorrow, probably, which means another evening without the capacity to make bread or soup (unless I buy beer), to shower (unless I go to the gym) or to use a flush toilet (without walking at least half a mile).

This applies still more so if no one has had plumbing work done and I just have to call a damn plumber and find out what the problem is.

I don't have time for this. I just want my water back.

(Adding to the catalogue of problems, because of the way my heating system works, I am afraid to turn the central heating system on - I certainly don't want the boiler to heat up the empty hot water tank.)

Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today!

BUT THE POSTAL WORKERS ARE ON STRIKE. BECAUSE ROYAL MAIL IS EVIL.

Why must Royal Mail be evil? Why?

There seems to be a government conspiracy to thirst you to death. Sorry about that. You might have to escape into the LA underground. PROMPTLY.

Thanks. I need to go home, soon, to get this sorted out. I am quite glad as I am quite tired and would otherwise be spending the whole evening here...

Oh no! Just caught up on your lack of water. We had that for half a day earlier this year when the boiler was replaced, and that was vexing enough. Can you visit a kindly local friend for showering and being fed and the like?

I don't have any very local friends. All my Edinburgh friends live miles an dmiles away. It is most unhelpful of them.

Are the shutoff valves for your whole street all grouped together at the end of the road, or something? Or how can they be confused? Our contractor just shut off our water (to install the new bath/shower plumbing) half an hour ago, and the valve is in our basement. You'd think that any plumber who turned off the wrong house's water supply would discover his mistake as soon as he opened a pipe that still had pressure! (And if he isn't imminently opening a pipe, what's he doing shutting off the water? That's not something you do until you're ready to actually work on the plumbing, for heaven's sake.)

By this time you will have doubtless at least begun making the rounds of the neighbors. Good luck!

The mains water pipe comes along the street, and enters one of four colony flats (the downstairs neighbour across from me, as it happens). From that flat, the mains water is piped upstairs (splitting left and right) and to the neighbour flat.

If any of my neighbours had been having plumbing work done, especially my downstairs-across from me neighbour, it was entirely possible that the plumber could have shut off their water and mine, without realising that the water was being shut off from more than one flat. (Or realising, but might have come round when I wasn't there, etc, since I got home very late last night.)

But, that didn't happen: the problem is exclusively in my flat. Which is a sod, because that makes it my problem, and a plumber's problem. But, thanks to the Internet, online reviews, and a plumber who owns a Blackberry, I have a promise that a plumber who has a lot of good reviews by customers will come round tomorrow afternoon and check out the valves in my pipes.

Every finger crossed that he gets to the root of the problem quickly and inexpensively!
