03:58 pm: Broccoli and pea soup, with strife
Soak about a cupful of dried split peas in boiling water.

Chop and fry three onions: when they're soft, add a chopped head of broccoli.

Add salt, dried basil and marjoram.

Listen to brother snarling at parents in background. Stir onions and broccoli over a strong heat till they're just beginning to brown.

Drain and add the soaked peas, then about 2 litres of water and a couple of veggie stock cubes, and a dash of Worcester sauce. Reflect that it isn't veggie and decide not to mention that, because of the lack of other spices available.

Simmer for about 10-20 minutes while brother attempts to pick fights with everyone at table.

Swirl the stick blender about in the soup till smooth, and serve with good bread and cheese. Calm ensues.

Hurray for soup and calm!
S'odd, the way people often feel better when they have eaten, and yet they don't take that into account. I do it too, I feel anxious and tense and angry and then I eat and feel better.
The soup sounds tasty. I'm sorry about the lack of spices there.

I was very angry with my brother, because he really was being an effin' pain, but it did occur to me afterwards that one reason he was being such a pain was because he hadn't eaten properly. Soup!

My mum had packed spices. But they were wrong for pea soup.

That sounds lovely apart from the familial arguments in the background. I hope you're surviving.

We went out for a walk after lunch along the river as far as the suspension bridge, which you cross to get to Dryburgh. That was very lovely and I took lots of very nice photos, in the intervals of carrying my nephew's baby buggy over particularly rocky or rooty bits. Once I got the knack of figuring out where the path was too rough for the buggy before it crashed this was OK. My nephew remained calmly asleep throughout, until we got to the road, and then he woke up, realised he hadn't been fed for a couple of hours, and shouted till his mum sat down and gave him a feed.

That was quite lovely.

But really, my brother is a pain. He just gets worse when he hasn't been fed proper.

It was perfectly delicious soup. (Perhaps a little salty, but very, very good.)
